Abstract English

Analysis of 3118 upper endoscopic examinations, and 324 biopsies done for patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms in Saudi Arabia is presented. Saudis and non-Saudis were the subject of this study over the last two years. Lesions due to acid peptic diseases were the commonst findings. Active duodenal ulcer was seen in 15% of patients, reflux oesophagitis in 27%, and gastroduodenitis in 41%. Yemenis and East Africans had the highest percentage of duodenal ulcer [20% each] . Oesophageal varices were more common in Egyptians [4%] , and Yemenis [3%] . No significant differences were found between different nationalities regarding other diseases. Cancer was detected in about 1% of all patients. Gastric tumours were found in 0.7%, and oesophageal tumours in 0.3%. Normal findings were seen in 30% of females, and 12% of males representing 17% of all patients
