Abstract English

A review was made of the pathologic features of 2010 patients with malignant lymphoma from the pathology record of National Cancer Institute during the years 1972-1981. This series included 1372 cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma [NHL] or 68.3% and 638 cases of Hodgkin’s disease [HD] or 31.7%. The mean age of NHL was 41.7 years and the male to female ratio was 2.3. Whereas, for HD, the corresponding figures were 29.8 years and 3.4, respectively. For histologic typing Rye classification was adopted for HD and a modified Rappaport system for NHL. The unfavorable histopathologic types predominated in the Egyptian patients. Thus, in HD there was a predominance of mixed cellularity subtype [59.9%] ; whereas, in NHL, 86% of cases were diffuse and the poorly-differentiated lymphocytic subtype predominated [60%] . These findings are discussed in light of the recent information in immunologic cell typing and more modern systems of classification of this disease
