Abstract English

Photochemotherapy [PUVA] in the form of oral administration of photoactive drug [Psoralen] followed by exposure to a high-intensity, long wave ultraviolet light system’ was used for the first time at King Hussein Medical Center [KHMC] , Amman – Jordan, in April 1978. In the period between April 1978 and April 1985, 87 patients were included In this study. Of these, 54 patients were with psoriasis, 16 with vitiligo, 4 with mycosis fungoides, 4 with exfoliative dermatiss, one with Sezary cell syndrome, 4 with acne, and 4 with alopecia totalis. There was complete clearing of 45 cases of generalized psoriasis and incomplete clearing of 8 cases. For vitiligo, the response was complete in 5 patients only, and partial or incomplete in 2. For the rest of the cases, PUVA therapy produced a temporary beneficial response. All patients were followed up for three years. Patients with psoriasis and vitiligo who showed complete or partial response remained on maintenance treatment
