is a very fast growing field which constitutes an essential component in the health information system of the health care services and in medical education; Recalling EM/RC44/R.4 on health informatics and telematics and recognizing the continuing need to consider health informatics support to health care institutions as a prerequisite for their proper functioning; 1. CALLS on Member States to: 1.1 Develop plans for the introduction of medical informatics in the health system so as to cover the needs of users; 1.2 Allocate financial and human resources to support health informatics plans; 1.3 Conduct awareness campaigns to sensitize health care professionals on the importance of medical informatics and their specific role in its use; 1.4 Make use of health informatics for development and administration of the health services and technical programmes; 1.5 Invest in human resources development in the information technology area; 2. REQUESTS the Regional Director to: 2.1 Ensure the development of a regional plan for systematic and institutional implementation of health and medical informatics in health care institutions in the Region; 2.2 Initiate a model medical informatics curriculum for medical colleges in the Region, to be introduced during the early years of study; 2.3 Initiate a model electronic medical record system format that takes into consideration in its design confidentiality and patient rights and legal aspects.
