Type Of Publication : Regional Committee resolutions RC Resolution Fulltext The Regional Committee, Having reviewed the progress report on the Tobacco Free Initiative in the Eastern Mediterranean Region ; Noting with concern
the overwhelming risks of tobacco in the Eastern Mediterranean Region for all age groups; Acknowledging efforts being made by national authorities; Recognizing the urgent need for more efforts to halt the tobacco epidemic, force it on to the retreat and move towards achieving the goals of the Tobacco Free Initiative in the Eastern Mediterranean Region; Recalling resolution E M C 3 4 R 7 on control of smoking, resolutions EMIRC36iR.7 and EMIRC39R.9 on healthy lifestyles and resolution EIWRC43R.12 on cancer prevention and control; 1. ENDORSES the revised plan of action for tobacco control in the Eastern Mediterranean Region; 2. URGES Member States to: 2.1 Formulate and implement national anti-tobacco programmes with well-defined targets based on the regional plan of action, up to the year 2003 and ensure that such programmes receive priority attention, involving all important and potential sectors and contributors, and are integrated with relevant programmes, particularly healthy lifestyles programmes and general education; 2.2 Ensure vigorous endorsement and effective implementation of existing tobacco control legislation; 2.3 Participate actively and widely in the process leading to the adoption and signing of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control; 3. REQUESTS the Regional Director to: 3.1 Support countries in the formulation of national tobacco control programmes and develop mechanisms to monitor programme implementation; 3.2 Develop a regional surveillance system to assess the impact of smoking on health and to monitor developments; 3.3 Promote coordination of activities and exchange of expertise between Member States in the area of tobacco control, particularly in relation to the role of the media, education and legislation.
