Coronary artery disease [CAD] and its related complications have recently increased in Pakistan. Sudden cardiac death, myocardial infarction and angina pectoris are a regular and constant occurrence.
A retrospective study of patients admitted to the Cardiac Care Unit [CCU] of Civil Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad with Acute Myocardial Infarction [AMI] was carried out. Over a 12 month period, 360 patients were found to have had a definite AMI, and males out-numbered females by almost 3: 1. Most of the admissions were during working hours and on Saturdays and Sundays. The mortality rate amongst males was higher than that in females with an overall mortality rate of 15.5%. CAD is multifactorial in nature and efforts should be made to identify, educate and treat people at high risk in order to improve their overall prognosis
