During 1988-89 a total of 504 cholecystectomies were performed at the Shaikh Zayed Hospital. Out of these cholecystectomy specimens, 34 had carcinomas [7%]. Association with lithiasis was 2.
The pre-operative diagnosis was possible only in eight cases [24% of all gallbladder carcinomas]. Majority of the carcinomas were adenocarcinomas of various histological grades; one was squamous cell carcinoma and one was adenosquamous carcinoma
