The present work was conducted to study the effect of green peas pod hull pentosans on cholesterol, glucose, some minerals [K, Zn, mg and Fe] and thyroid hormones [73 and T4] of diabetic rats.
Two main experimental groups were established. The first main group [n = 6] used as a negative control group [fed on basal diet] and the second main group [n = 36] was injected with aloxane [150 mg/kg body weight] to induce hyperelycemia. The diabetic rats were randomly assigned to six subgroups [n = 6] according to the following scheme. Subgroup  fed on basal diet contains 5% commercial cellulose as a positive control group;  fed on basal diet contains 5% pentosans [which extracted from dried green peas pod hull] ;  fed on basal diet contains 4% pentosanes + 1% commercial cellulose;  fed on basal diet contains 3% pentosanes + 2% commercial cellulose;  fed on basal diet contains 2% pentosanes + 3% commercial ceilniose and subgroup  fed on basal diet contains 1% pentosanes +/- 4% commercial cellulose. Increasing levels of pentosanes led to improvement of body weight gain% [BWG%] , food efficiency ratio and the concentrations of potassium [K] , zinc [Zn] , magnesium [mg] , iron [Fe] , cholesterol, glucose, triiodothyronine [T3] , thyroxine [T4] and cortisone in diabetic groups. It was concluded that the highest levels from pentosanes, which were extracted from dried green peas pods hull [4 and 5g/100g diets] , realized the best results in most parameters in diabetic rats
