The present study aimed to study the ultrastructure of the endometrium of the female rats during pregnancy and to study the effects of chronic alcohol intake on the ultrastructure of the endometrium.
Twenty adult female and five adult male rats were used in the present study. The pregnant female rats were divided into two groups: 1st group [5 animals] was used as a control group and 2nd group [15 animals] was the alcoholic group given liquid diet with alcohol 6 weeks before pregnancy and up to the last day of pregnancy. For both groups, the antimesometrial endometrium on the last day of pregnancy was examined by transmission electron microscope. Chronic alcohol intake produced ultrastructure changes in the uterine luminal epitheluim of the rats on the last day of pregnancy. The microvilli covering the apical surface of the luminal epithelial cells were long and sparely distributed with shallow invaginations of the apical plasma membrane at the bases of the microvilli. There were decreasing of the coated vesicles along the basal and basolateral cell membranes. There were also hypertrophy of Golgi elements and re-organization of the mitochondrial cristae into tubular and/or vesicular forms. The macrophages and oesinophilic cells were also seen in the subepithelial stroma
