Our early experience of extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy [ESWL] using the Lithostar Plus Lithotriptor, over a period of 18 months [from 13th September, 89 to 13th March, 91] is presented.
A total of 850 patients of urinary tract stones underwent 1320 treatments for 1200 stones. There were 1050 renal calculi, 105 ureteric calculi, 40 staghorn stones and 5 urinary bladder stones. Stone fragmentation was achieved with 1724 +/- 1035 shocks at 19 KV. Our immediate stone fragmentation rate was 96% with a 3 months clearance rate of 88%. Secondary treatments were required in 25% of patients and auxiliary procedures in 10% of our cases. A linear relationship between the stone size and number of shock-waves to achieve stone fragmentation was noted. It was concluded that the success of ESWL depends to a large extent on the stone mass. The Lithostar Plus Lithotriptor is a very effective second generation lithotriptor which can be successfully used for the treatment of renal, staghorn stones, ureteric calculi in situ, without manipulation. It can also be used in urinary bladder stones, in exceptional cases
