A new era of orthopedic surgery has been initiated by the basic scientific advances that have resulted in the development of gene therapy as an approach for managing various orthopedic conditions.
The terminology, fundamental concepts and current research and development in this new field must be understood by practicing orthopedic surgeons. Multiple gene vectors and a multitude of cytokines produced a growing list of potential orthopedic diseases, which have been studied through these perspectives. As gene therapy applications for bone healing, articular disorders, skeletal muscle injuries, bone tumors and infections are explored, many new treatment strategies for musculoskeletal conditions will broaden the spectrum of practice for the orthopedic surgeon
