A descriptive study carried on children with nephrotic syndrome under steroid treatment admitted to Saddam Central Teaching Hospital for Children for the period from July 1999 till January 2000.
The study was conducted aiming to see the growth retardation and delayed puberty due to steroid toxicity also the effect of frequent relapsing and the long period of the disease on the same issue. Those under cytotoxic drug or received it had been excluded.108 patients, 60 of them were male and 48 were females, their age ranged from 2-12 years. It was found that high percentage of steroid toxicity among them [59.25%] with significant growth retardation [height] . The duration of the disease, frequent number of relapses had significant effect on height. In those who reach age of puberty [50 child] , a significant delayed of puberty was found in 36 of them [94.73%] and these findings mimic many studies in the same way and have the same reason, like the effect of steroid on bone maturation centers, long period of the disease, and with frequent relapses from this point a suggestion to make a trial of growth hormone therapy to decrease the effect of such therapy on nephrotic children
