Blood Transfusion is a life saving procedure if employed well in time. It a rather a dangerous and a potentially lethal form of therapy and clear indications for its use must therefore exist.
Indications of blood transfusion and prevalence of ABO and Rh 'D' type blood groups in emergency cases was studied at District Headquarters Hospital Rawalpindi. Haemorrhage due to trauma remains the number one cause, requiring blood transfusion in 2738 [58.9%] cases. Gynae/Ob cases are next important category, numbering 1515 [32.6%] . It is important to Replace lost amount of blood, as in 86 [1.9%] burn cases mainly plasma was lost and we should have replaced the same amount. Loss of blood or its components should always be accurately assessed to avoid overloading the patient's circulation. Moreover we should insist on [a] decreasing pre-operative blood use by better physician education as to the proper indications of blood or its component's transfusion and [b] introducing the concept of intra-operative salvage of blood
