Nirtic oxide [NO] has witnessed an explosion of intrest of scientist allover the world dring the last decade. It is considered as a free radical since it contains an odd number of electrons.
is actually, an important cytotoxic molecule that results in vasodilatation and inflammation. In this work, we studied the level of NO metabolites in mucosa of choronic sinusitis patients, and its relation to the host defense mechanism. The studdy included 47 patients with chronic sinusitis and 17 control subjects, in whom tissue NO metabolites and serum IL-12 were measured. Tissue NO metabolite level was found to be significantly higher in chronic sinusitis patients as compared to controls [P<0.01] . On the other hand, serum IL-12 was found to be significantly lower in chronic sinusitis patients as compared to controls [P<0.05] . However, a significant negative correlation was not proved between tissue NO metabolites and serum IL-12 in chronic sinusitis patients. We concluded that, NO metabolites seem to have an important role in chronic sinusitis patients. Decreased IL-12 production may also contribute to chronicity in this disease. However, the relation of NO to the host defense mechanism has to be further evaluated
