Between December 1987 and May 1992, 12 adult patients underwent percutaneous patent ductus arteriosus [PDA] closure in our institution using the Rashkind double-disk ductal occluding device.
patient age ranged from 13 to 45 years, with a mean age of 19 years. The devices were successfully delivered in all 12 patients with no complications. Angiographic evidence of complete closure of the PDA immediately following implantation of the device was achieved in 7 patients [58%] . Residual shunts were present in 5 patients [42%] . However, at 6-month follow-up only three of these 5 patients continued to have mild residual leak on echocardiography [25%] . One of these 3 patients underwent a successful repeat implantation of an occluder device, achieving complete closure. All patients with residual leak had a large PDA diameter [4 to 7 mm] and all but 1 patient received a 17-mm device. These results confirm that PDA closure using transcatheter double-disk ductal occluding device is a safe and effective procedure in the adult population
